Dollar Limit: $2,000 (Small Claims); $10,000 (Special Civil Part)

Where To Sue: Where defendant resides. Nonresident defendants where breach or injury occurred.

Service: Certified mail, sheriff, sergeant-at arms, court- approved adult, or Officers of the Special Civil Part.

Hearing Date: Set by court.

Attorneys: Allowed.

Transfer: If defendant requests jury trial or counterclaims for more than $2000, case tried under regular civil procedure of Civil Part.

Appeals: By either side for review of law, not facts; to Appellate Division of Superior Court within 45 days.

Special Provisions: Only contract, property damage caused by motor vehicles and landlord-tenant security deposit cases. Right to sue may not be transferred. Jury trials are available by written demand or court order.
